After talking with both ex-inmates
and jail and prison facility counselors, MCSSD become aware of the lack of services
and support provided by the local Muslim Community to Muslim Inmates. In response,
MCSSD has initiated an Inmate Support Services Program.
All praise is due to Allah, in
June of 2007, MCSSD donated Islamic reading materials to San Diego facility libraries
in the areas of Basic Belief/Aqeeda, Worship, Hadith, Tafseer, Sirah, Morality,
and Marriage. The total number of books donated was over 180. The majority of books
were written in English, but there were also several in Spanish. Books were selected
and donated for the benefit of both Muslim inmates seeking to increase their knowledge,
and non-Muslim inmates seeking information about Islam. Click here to see the list
of donated books.
At the same time, MCSSD gave each facility a Resource Folder for Inmate Counselors. The folder included information
about local Muslim organizations, a helpful Guide to Islamic Religious Practices,¯
(published and provided by the Council on American Islamic Relations), contact information
for local mosques, a list of books donated to the facility, and several Applications
for Islamic Reading Material¯ to be made available to inmates.
In addition, MCSSD developed a mail correspondence course entitled Moral Development
Through the Teachings of Islam.¯
The course curriculum and course application were also made available to counselors
at the different facilities. This course is available to all inmates, regardless
of religious affiliation. Click here to see the Course Overview
We hope to expand our services in the near future, God Willing.
If you are interested in developing a similar program in your area, please contact us. We would be happy to help in whatever way we can, God Willing.
